Know what each band means.

Universities usually ask for an overall band and a minimum in each section. Your instructor will confirm the requirement for your target program; use this to understand the distance between where you are and where you need to be.

Overall band is the average of the four section bands, rounded to the nearest half band.

Fully operational command

Only occasional unsystematic inaccuracies. Handles complex, detailed argumentation well.

7Good user

Operational command with occasional errors

Handles complex language well and understands detailed reasoning. Common entry requirement for postgraduate study.

6Competent user

Effective command despite some errors

Uses and understands fairly complex language, particularly in familiar situations. Common minimum for undergraduate entry.

5Modest user

Partial command, copes with overall meaning

Likely to make many mistakes. Handles basic communication in own field.

Examiners mark each against four criteria, weighted equally. The platform's feedback follows the same four, so what you read here is what you'll see on your results.
